Weeds

I got lost in the garden this morning after walking the dog - 'garden time' strikes again. I'm sure I was there 5 minutes, but I managed to miss a doctor's appointment an hour and a half later! Bad weeds for me right now include plantain, chickweed, pearly everlasting and sow thistle. I also constantly pull out self seeded roses (mostly multifloras), hollyhock, rose campion, and weigela. It's time to pull out my annual poppy, and just leave a few for seed.

  1. In the flower beds golden rod and blue vetch are bad at the moment. In the veggie bed I am battling barnyard grass and have most of it out for now!

  2. I tried to help my parents with their vegetable garden on the weekend. THe barnyard grass was so thick you couldn't find the real plants!! I eventually gave up (it was just too hot) and dad and I mulched the area with newspaper. Here's hoping!

  3. I'm beginning to believe weeding out barnyard grass is like doing housework... do it now and redo it all two days later grrr... did mulch some of garden with straw so we'll see how that goes!

  4. I have to pop home tomorrow and see how the newspaper held up. It's too bad it got away on us last year - one year's weeds... 10 years seeds! sigh.

  5. I wonder how many barnyard grass seeds are in the seed bank? I regret adding horse manure to the garden four falls ago.

  6. My parents swear theirs came in a load of straw mulch two years ago, All I know is that they let it go to seed last year - and that was a mistake!

  7. Well, the newspaper didn't work out - Earl blew it all over the property, and that was the end of that.
